Diving in Phuket – West-coast reefs, wrecks & day trips
Phuket is Thailand’s classic west-coast dive hub, with easy access to Racha islands, Phi Phi, Shark Point and King Cruiser wreck. It's a great base if you want to mix diving with beaches, food, nightlife, and non-diving activities.Most Phuket dive trips are full-day boat trips from Chalong Pier, visiting two or three sites in a day. You can dive Racha Yai / Racha Noi for clear water and easy conditions, or head to King Cruiser, Shark Point, and Anemone Reef for more advanced reef and wreck dives.
Best season
The main west-coast season runs from Nov–Apr with calmer seas and better visibility. Diving is still possible in the green season (May–Oct), but waves and surface conditions can be rougher.

A mix of easy sites at the Racha islands and more advanced sites like King Cruiser and Shark Point. Great for certified divers, with options for beginners and discover scuba as well.
Typical prices
Day trips from Phuket are mid-range priced compared to the rest of Thailand—more than Koh Tao, but with bigger boats, included meals, and longer journeys. Liveaboard trips to the Similan Islands are a separate, higher-budget option.

Planning your trip
- Phuket has an international airport (HKT) with plenty of direct flights. Most dive boats depart from Chalong Pier in the south of the island.
- If diving is your main focus, staying near Chalong, Rawai, Kata or Karon makes logistics easier. Patong is busier and nightlife-focused but still workable with early-morning transfers.
- Most day trips are full-day schedules with hotel pick-ups, breakfast, lunch and 2–3 dives included. Expect long but comfortable boat days on larger dive boats.
- Thinking about the Similan Islands? Many divers stay in Phuket but travel up to Khao Lak or join a liveaboard. You can compare Andaman coast bases with Khao Lak or look at Koh Tao for east-coast training islands.
- November–April is usually the calmer Phuket window. Day trips can still run from May–October, but exposed routes are more likely to be changed or cancelled because of swell. Beginners should keep a buffer day and compare Phuket with the Thailand diving seasons by region.

Is Phuket good for beginner divers?
Yes. The Racha islands offer clear, relatively easy conditions for Discover Scuba and Open Water courses. If you want very short boat rides and a pure training focus, Koh Tao is still the top option, but Phuket works well if you want more variety and a bigger holiday destination.
What are the must-dive sites from Phuket?
For most certified divers, the classic combo is Racha Yai / Racha Noi plus King Cruiser, Shark Point and Anemone Reef. If you have extra time, a day trip to the Phi Phi Islands is also very popular.
